If you are interested in doing business with a passionate man who simply loves IT, let me introduce you to Jeff Rogers. He is simply happy to be in business! He loves what he does for a living, and it really shows. I was able to pin him down for a few minutes to discuss what he sees as extremely important when it comes to his customers.
Jeff makes a point of sharing his personal cellphone number with all of his customers, and invites them to call him any time of the day or night (within reason of course!). He recounts times when he has had calls at 2.00 am in the morning on a Sunday because a problem needed to be solved with a project that had to be up and running by Monday morning; and he has no problem solving problems! In fact problem solving is his passion.
One of his most memorable calls was on Halloween from a large financial institution regarding a broken hard drive. The call came in close to midnight asking if Jeff had a hard drive that the company had been unable to access from anywhere else. His systems engineer at the time was somewhat of a hoarder and had the part number needed stacked neatly away in his garage. They drove, at 1:00 am in their costumes over to the data center in Sacramento where they met with the CIO of the company. The problem was fixed with no purchase order or formal paperwork. Jeff simply wanted to get the system up once more. The drive was handed off, and up and running within a couple of hours. This hard drive was vital to support the worldwide financial needs of the company in question. Everything was running perfectly by the following morning. This was a big win for Jeff’s customer, and a big win for Jeff, and he likes it that way! “That’s the way we work, our business is part of your business, and we are there to support our customers.”
Big Green IT does indeed have an open door policy. If you visit them at their headquarters near Sacramento, the door is invariably open, allowing the fresh air in, and the ideas to flow! There is nothing stuffy about this office, where the passion can be visibly felt by the warm welcome and the positive attitudes. They are lucky enough to have a putting green right outside the office, and should ideas need to be discussed or problems solved, it is off for a quick competitive round of golf.
However, I will not be giving away details of Jeff’s costume during his memorable Halloween call. If you want to know more about it I would suggest listening to the audio cast! Also watch out for information on ‘The Pond’ and why fun times in business are so important to Jeff and his team.
